Stage omschrijving

Royal Joh. Enschedé in Haarlem is a security printing company that exists since 1703. During our existence we have introduced many innovations to make printed documents and art safer and more difficult to counterfeit. We are continuously working on innovations and one such project is Collimetrix (https://www.joh-enschede.nl/collimetrix/). Within this project we are developing ultra-thin string with a repetitive pattern of RFID and NFC tags. Each tag consists of a thin antenna and an RFID or NFC chip. This string can be placed invisibly between layers of (bank) paper or packaging film. In this way we embedded a unique digital identifier into paper/packing. These identifiers can be used to secure and track products throughout their life cycle.

We are looking for one or two students who want to participate in this Collimetrix project and realize a measurement and test setup. The roll of paper or foil still needs to be printed after the string of RFID/NFC tags is inserted between the layers. With a test setup, we want to investigate whether the tags are not damaged during and after being fed through. We want to perform these measurements while the rolls of paper are continuously fed through a (test) printing machine.

The assignment for the students (may) include the following items

  • Create software to read the identifier of the RFID or NFC tags. The software should store the results in, for example, a database. The software should not only record successful reads but also detect failed (read error) as well as missing/broken tags. This probably requires measuring the paper speed with an encoder to detect the distance between tag reads. Alternative could be to use a machine vision solution.
  • Making the hardware setup to read the RFID or NFC tags. (Coupling tag readers, encoders, computers etc)
  • Making (based on old machines) a test setup where rolls of paper can be fed through. On these rolls strings of tags will be added for test purpose.
  • Present the test results in reports / presentations so that there is clear insight in results. It should also be reported which tags are working correctly, which problems occur and where faulty tags can be found.

We are looking for students that follow a study in either technical software programming, industrial automation or mechatronics. The student must have relevant software programming skills and preferably some (basic) knowledge of RFID and NFC tags and electronic/hardware components. Machine vision could also be usefull. The students have to work on the test setup themselfves, i.e. the test setup is a stand-alone sub project within the Collimetrix team. For guidance, two technical Collimetrix project members are available on a (nearly) daily basis.

For more information, please contact Robert Jan Gorter at info@collimetrix.joh-enschece.nl. Before we start, we like to have an introduction meeting where the student(s) can learn more about the project and we can check if the assignment fits with the student ambitions and background.
